With aerospace components manufactured from nickel-based alloys becoming increasingly prevalent, the demand for optimized cutting tools is growing. With this in mind, Sandvik Coromant has developed two solutions for shoulder and face milling of nickel-alloy aero-engine parts.

Ceramic tools retain their hardness at the high temperatures associated with milling heat-resistant super alloys (HRSA), which Sandvik Coromant says can contribute to significant speed increases compared to solid carbide tools. With the new, larger head diameter available from D16-25 mm, it will be possible to reach high RPM cutting speeds with conventional machining centers.

Beyond shoulder and face milling, the new end mills can also be used for pocket milling, helical interpolation, ramping and slot milling.

This new grade is now reportedly capable of 30% greater performance in stainless steels and heat-resistant super alloys, and up to 75% greater performance in steels than comparable grades.

Kennametal has introduced milling inserts designed for wear resistance and improved tool life.

Zinc Aluminum Spinel The WXN15 coated grade inserts can be used for copy milling, face milling, ramping, pocket milling and circular interpolation milling.
