FORT ST. JOHN -- The Site C Dam project has reached another major milestone. Blade Ii Cast
The first generator rotor on the project has been placed into the Unit 1 generator pit inside the Site C generating station.
“The rotor weighs more than 600 tonnes and took two powerhouse cranes four hours to carefully lift it. Assembling the rotor took about a year to complete,” said Bob Gammer, the Manager of Communications for Site C.
The rotor contains the electromagnets that will create a magnetic field which, when rotated past the copper windings in the stationary stator bars, creates the flow of electricity.
Over the next 18 months, we will be doing five more similar lifts for the remaining units.
BC Hydro says the dam’s reservoir could be filled by as early as this fall. The entire project is over 70 per cent complete.
All six generating units are scheduled to be operational by November 2025.
