The 18 Best Slippers and House Shoes of 2024, Tested and Reviewed

If you're working out or standing all day at work, your feet can certainly take a beating — which makes it more important than ever to invest in a comfortable pair of slippers that will support you and help your body to recover. And if you're working from home, you might be looking for the perfect house shoe to help to absorb shock from walking on hard, flat floors that won't leave your feet sweating like crazy during summer or cold during winter.

"You want to always wear slippers in the house," says Hillary Brenner, D.P.M., a podiatrist based in New York City. When you wear a supportive pair of slippers, they can help with shock absorption on hard surfaces, including wood floors, tile, and marble, to reduce strain on your joints, she explains.

We tested 23 pairs of slippers and house shoes from podiatrist-recommended brands like UGG, L.L. Bean, Birkenstock, and more. We wore these house shoes at least one hour a day for two weeks to get a serious feel for the slippers’ comfort, design, quality, durability, and value.

Why We Like It: They’re perfect for cooler weather.

It’s Worth Noting: They have a pretty snug fit, but they'll loosen up a bit as you wear them, according to shoppers. But, if you plan to wear them with socks or have wide feet, size up.

Uggs have long been known as makers of the best slippers for women, and these shoes prove why. The Ugg slippers are made of soft suede, lined with decadent sheepskin and upcycled wool, and have a lightweight platform (that won't feel clunky) and an embroidered braid across the top to add extra style. Somehow, despite the warm lining, our feet never overheated or felt sweaty. (In fact, shearing-lined slippers are perfect for those with sweaty feet, as the natural fibers wick sweat away from the skin.) What's more, they feature the brand's trademarked cushioning and traction for a lightweight yet durable sole. Bonus: The Tasman slippers have the same outsole as the brand's Classic Boot, so you can wear them indoors and outside.

After our two-week testing period, we were more convinced than ever of the quality of these house slippers. The stitching remained perfect and the soles stood up to outdoor wear. We did notice these slippers were hard to get on the first time and a bit snug in the toes, but the pliable material quickly stretched to accommodate our feet.

Sizes: 5-12 | Width: Medium | Colors: 18

Why We Like Them: The sturdy sole provides firm arch support.

It’s Worth Noting: They’re not machine-washable, which may cause odor buildup over time.

If you're familiar with Vionic, you've probably caught wind that the brand is one of Oprah's favorites for comfy footwear — which makes sense, as its shoes are designed with the help of podiatrists. This house shoe has an orthotic footbed with a deep heel cup to provide extra arch support (and prevent pronation). The outsoles are durable enough for outdoor wear. People with foot and joint issues will especially love them because they help relieve pain from plantar fasciitis and knee problems.

We’re a little wary of the tag saying this slipper isn’t washable (not even by hand), even though the brand notes that the footbed has an anti-bacterial, odor-resistant treatment. So far, we haven’t noticed any lingering odors.

Sizes: 5-12 | Width: Medium | Colors: 6

Why We Like It: The shearling heel lining keeps ankles warm.

It’s Worth Noting: The brand advises you to order up if you happen to be a half size.

We raved about the quality and versatility of these slippers from L.L. Bean, and the velvet suede exterior was dubbed “unbeatable” by one editor. These slippers stood up to every surface we tested them on, including hardwood, carpet, laminate, and cement, and the ankle height means they stay on firmly for any activity. We noticed that the lining stayed fresh and fluffy throughout the testing period, unlike the Minnetonka Moccasins, which started to get smushed. Three months after testing concluded, these were still in mint condition, so we feel confident that they’re durable and worth spending a little extra money on.

Since these are a little more of a splurge than other slippers we tested, make sure you size according to L.L. Bean’s recommendations (that is, half sizes should order up).

Sizes: 5-11 | Width: Medium and Wide | Colors: 8

Why We Like It: The small zipper pocket on the top can hold the essentials.

It’s Worth Noting: They tend to slide if you try to slip into them on hardwood floors.

If you're in the market for something sporty yet comfortable, check out these slippers from Nike. They are lined with cozy fleece and have a soft foam midsole that feels like stepping into a marshmallow. Plus, the zipper pocket on the top lets you stash small items such as keys or cash if you're heading out to walk the dog or make a grocery store run and don't want to carry a purse. We also appreciated that these look a little more modern than your typical fleece slippers; we felt totally comfortable wearing these in casual public settings.

We never felt any slipping or sliding when walking around in these slippers, thanks to the anti-slip outsole and traction pattern. However, we did notice it was a little tricky putting them on while on hardwood or slippery floors, so we’d recommend using your hands to assist or donning these shoes on carpet.

Sizes: 5-12 | Width: Medium | Colors: 4

Why We Like It: Its soft, fluffy texture is perfection.

It’s Worth Noting: The sandal style leaves your feet open to the elements, so these might not be ideal for snowy winters.

Who would have thought you could score a super cozy slipper from a shoe brand that hails from Hawaii? This Olukai sandal has soft shearling-wrapped straps for a comfy fit, and an anatomical platform and cushioned footbed, giving it a supportive barefoot feel. It also boasts a non-marking, grippy rubber outsole for added traction on wet or slick surfaces. Not to mention, the outsole features a tropical design of island flora for a mood boost during winter. Despite being fully covered in shearling, these sandals don't make feet sweat — pretty impressive.

Sizes: 5-11 | Width: Medium | Colors: 5

Why We Like It: The plush memory foam helps your feet relax.

It’s Worth Noting: The slippers aren’t available in half-sizes.

In contrast to the Ugg Tasman slippers, which run over a hundred dollars, the Ultraideas Memory Foam Slippers are around $20 and impressed us during testing. Constructed with a warm fleece lining and a high-density memory foam insole, this house shoe molds to your feet and keeps you comfy and supported — even if the only walking you're doing is from the bed to your couch. We found the rubber outsole to be perfect for slippery floors and we’d feel confident using them moderately outdoors to pick up the mail or water outdoor plants. We especially appreciated that we could machine wash these for easy care, making them one of our choices for best slippers for women.

Our only quibble was that the sizing is a little vague. You have the option of buying sizes 5/6, 7/8, 9/10, or 11/12, which leaves a lot of room for guessing. One editor usually wears a size 6.5 and sized up to the 7/8 pair, which felt a little too roomy.

Sizes: 5-12 | Width: Medium | Colors: 11

Why We Like It: The shearling lining is just fluffy enough without being suffocating.

It’s Worth Noting: The soles of the shoes have an odd design that left us wondering about durability.

If you’re a Birkenstock stan, you’ll love the Zermatt Slipper, which is a cozified version of their uber-popular Boston Clogs (which — spoiler alert — show up on this list too). With the classic cork-latex footbed and deep heel cup, we found these slippers to be similar to wearing the clogs, but with a little extra warmth. The upper is made out of wool felt, a sustainable material that helps keep warmth in, and the outsole kept feet dry even during late-night dog walks on wet ground.

We were a little confused about the sole of the shoe, which almost looks like dipped rubber coating the bottom of the shoe rather than the usual cork material you’d see with Birks. However, at the three-month testing mark, the shoes had held up to our standards. We also felt these run slightly narrow.

Sizes: 4 to 12.5 | Width: Regular/wide or medium/narrow | Colors: 6

Why We Like It: It’s podiatrist-approved for healthy feet.

It’s Worth Noting: This slipper tends to run small, but with free returns it's easy to exchange them for the correct size.

A best-seller in the women's slide sandals category on Amazon, Dr. Brenner says she is "obsessed" with this comfortable cloud-like pick. It gets Dr. Brenner's seal of approval as one of the best slippers for women because it checks so many of her boxes: it has a 1.75-inch platform base, deep heel cup, molded cushion footbed, firm midsole, and rubber, non-slip outsole for added grip and stability. It comes in 11 colorways, and the sandal style can take you from the comfort of home to running errands, grabbing coffee, or for a walk on the beach.

The cushioning in these podiatrist-approved slippers makes you feel like you’re walking on clouds, and we’d recommend these for people with plantar fasciitis. Plus, the bottom is really quiet so as not to disturb neighbors when walking around, if you live in an apartment or condo building.

Sizes: 5-12 | Width: Medium | Colors: 21

Why We Like It: The wool material is warm, yet breathable.

It’s Worth Noting: We recommend sizing up.

This slip-on features a cozy wool upper and fleece lining and also has the brand's signature active footbed that supports your feet and provides all-day comfort. The clog is way more fashion-forward than other slippers out there, which means you can also sport it outside on walks with your dog or just hanging on your deck or patio. Pick from earthy tones including olive, black, and moonrock (a tan color), or go with the blanket design for a more colorful look.

We especially appreciate the grippy soles on these shoes, and the fact that they’re wearable right out of the box — no break-in time required..

Sizes: 5-11 | Width: Medium | Colors: 6

Why We Like It: They look like Ugg slippers at a fraction of the price.

It’s Worth Noting: There’s no arch support, so we wouldn’t recommend walking extensively in these slippers.

These fuzzy moccasin slippers have a suede exterior with stylish stitching on the top, fur lining, thick, flexible soles, and a rubber outsole with grippy traction to support you on wet or slippery surfaces. We found them warm and cozy, perfect for lounging around the house. They’re pretty flat, so while you can technically wear them outside, we’d recommend you use these slippers for relaxing and short walks.

We did notice that as the testing period went on, the fur lining got more compacted and less fluffy. At our three-month mark for testing, these slippers felt noticeably stretched out and less secure around our feet (so, more prone to flip-flopping or falling off our heels).

Sizes: 5-11 | Width: Medium and Wide | Colors: 15

Why We Like It: The design of this house slipper supports the foot health of people with bunions, arthritis, or plantar fasciitis.

It’s Worth Noting: The footbed can be slippery given the fuzzy texture.

This platform sandal-slipper delivers style and comfort, thanks to arch support, a deep heel cup (which helps cradle your foot if walking long distances or standing all day), and a furry material that's soft against your skin. And because they're indoor- and outdoor-friendly, these slippers are machine-washable, making cleaning them a breeze.

Just because they're cheap doesn't mean they're not healthy for your feet. People with foot issues (such as arthritis, bunions, and plantar fasciitis) will appreciate the orthopedic-focused design.

Sizes: 6-11 | Width: Medium | Colors: 10

Why We Like It: The 100% genuine sheepskin lining keeps feet warm and toasty without sweating.

It’s Worth Noting: Although we liked that these were available in wide widths, we felt the sizing was a little inconsistent.

These shearling slippers are the epitome of coziness, and we were instantly impressed with the 100% genuine sheepskin lining. We found that it provided the perfect amount of temperature control, keeping feet warm without overheating. We were particularly blown away by the synthetic moisture-wicking materials, which let us walk in dewy grass without damaging the shoes (they dried really quickly, in fact). The shearling lining stayed fluffed up throughout testing, and the wide range of available shades was a pleasant bonus.

We’d recommend these house shoes primarily to people with wide feet, since there are plenty of wide-width sizes available to choose from. We did feel like one slipper was noticeably wider than the other, which made it a little more uncomfortable to walk in, but we realize this could be a case of the tester having slightly different-sized feet.

Sizes: 5-14 | Width: Medium and Wide | Colors: 14

Why We Like Them: They're podiatrist-approved.

It's Worth Noting: This model runs small, so go up a size.

These clogs feature the brand's signature cork-latex footbed, soft suede upper, and a shearling footbed and lined strap to keep your feet toasty. Just like other Birkenstock classics, the great thing about these house shoes is that they help you stay comfortable for hours on end thanks to a deep heel cup, arch support, and toe grip (raised indentations at the front of the footbed near the toes) so toes can spread out in their natural position. They’re stylish enough and durable enough to wear out of the house — and TBH, you’ll probably find yourself reaching for them on the daily.

Sizes: 5-13 | Width: Narrow, Medium | Colors: 7

Why We Like It: They’re perfect for early morning or late night dog walks in cold weather.

It’s Worth Noting: They only come in two colors, black and camel brown, so while they will go with everything in your wardrobe, they are fairly understated — perfect for minimalists.

While it might closely resemble the winter footwear in your closet, Sorel's bootie acts as both a boot and a slipper, which makes it worth the price tag. You'll stay toasty, comfortable, and supported all day thanks to the leather exterior, plush faux fur lining, incredibly soft footbed, and anti-slip rubber platform outsole, which makes this slipper boot great for transitioning from the couch to the neighborhood sidewalk.

Sizes: 5-11 | Width: Medium | Colors: 2

Why We Like It: It features a synthetic down material for ultimate warmth.

It’s Worth Noting: The elastic around the heel is a little tight for those with high arches.

Combining The North Face's Thermoball Eco insulation (a synthetic alternative to down) with a durable rubber sole with reliable traction, this sleeping-bag-looking slipper is ideal for everything from après ski to your morning coffee run — even when temperatures plummet to freezing. It features a fleece collar lining that won't irritate skin, a collapsible heel with elastic to keep it securely in place, and a water-repellent ripstop upper to protect your feet from the elements.

While the elastic around the heel helps keep this bootie in place, it may get a little tight and uncomfortable, especially if you have high arches. If you run into that issue, try the L.L. Bean Squam Lake Booties as a backup.

Sizes: 5-11 | Width: Medium | Colors: 27

Why We Like It: Their materials are designed to stand up to tougher outdoor conditions.

It’s Worth Noting: The collar of the slipper is loose fitting, which causes the foot to slip a bit.

Wear these incredibly comfortable slippers around the house, campsite, or while bopping around town during your next ski trip. They have a cushioned footbed and lightweight midsole for comfort, plus a lugged, rubber outsole that provides traction even on snowy or icy terrain. A ripstop upper keeps you protected while adventuring, and a special coating repels water for misty mornings walking the dog or when you get caught in unexpected light rain. And the slippers have an antimicrobial treatment to help reduce foot odor, so you don't have to worry about side-eye from fellow campers around the fire after a long day hiking. Just know that the collar of these house shoes is slightly loose, so you might want to wear athletic socks so your feet don’t slip.

Sizes: 5-11 | Width: Medium | Colors: 6

Why We Like It: The impact-absorbing design will help your feet bounce back after long runs.

It’s Worth Noting: These are meant to be worn on hard surfaces and for light errands; their thick sole can trip you up on longer walks.

We’re fascinated by Oofos and the company’s promise to help you recover faster, so while Oofos sandals weren’t included in our original house shoes and slippers test, an editor tested them separately to see how the shoes stack up. We tested the Oofos Ooah Slide Sandal for three months, wearing it at least three times a week.

This sandal is designed specifically for workout recovery, making it ideal to slip on after a long run or an at-home workout. It has a special foam technology that absorbs 37 percent more impact than traditional footwear foam and an insanely comfortable footbed that supports your arches while reducing stress on your joints (so it's also a great pick for those on their feet all day long). We felt the orthopedic footbed cradling and supporting the arches, and wearing them was a perfect blend of comfy cushioning and real, high-quality support.

We love that these shoes are machine-washable and odor-resistant (seriously, no one ever wants to be the one with stinky feet in a room). And if you have wider feet, these slides feel roomy enough (or you can try the Sport Flex Sandal, which has an adjustable Velcro strap across the top). If you prefer a slip-on sneaker, there's also the Oofos Oomg eeZee Low Shoes.

Sizes: 5-16 | Width: Medium | Colors: 8

Why We Like It: This sock-slipper hybrid has a subtle but strong grip on the sole.

It’s Worth Noting: The bottom grips wear out sooner than expected.

If you're a fan of wearing cozy wool socks around the home, but hate the slip factor, then you'll adore this sock-slipper hybrid. Made of a breathable blend of cotton and wool, these slipper socks have a brushed lining on the inside for warmth and special grippy dots on the bottom (much like this pair of editor-loved toe socks for at-home workouts and barre class) to keep you from sliding on hard surfaces. You'll love the bold jacquard pattern, and unlike other options that made this list, this pair is machine washable and folds flat for easy packing, making it ideal for travel and one of the best slippers for women on the market.

While the bottom grippers are ideal for slippery surfaces, keep an eye out to make sure they’re not wearing down. They soles are thinner than regular slippers and house shoes, so if you wear these often, you might have to replace them more frequently.

Sizes: XS-L | Width: Medium | Colors: 8

We started our research by talking to a podiatrist, Dr. Hillary Brenner, about what qualities are essential in the best slippers for women, learning about arch support, soft materials, slipper construction, sizing, and more. Then, we analyzed a wide range of house shoes and slippers at a variety of price points to ultimately narrow down our list to the 23 shoes we wanted to test. We tested these slippers for two weeks, wearing each pair for at least one hour per day while taking extensive notes on comfort, quality, durability, warmth, and overall value. We also included recommendations from a podiatrist and from our health-obsessed editors. Finally, we compiled our insights and ratings to create this list.

There are so many textures and materials to choose from: cozy fleece and shearling, soft memory foam, odor-resistant wool, and more. With that in mind, Dr. Brenner suggests soft, breathable constructions such as cotton and linen.

In addition, be on the lookout for foam soles or thermoplastic rubber outsoles, she adds. Rubber outsoles are durable, shock-absorbing, and waterproof or water-resistant for better traction on hard surfaces. Plus, you can wear the slippers outdoors in a pinch if you need to grab the mail, walk your dog, or run a quick errand.

With so many slipper styles on the market, it can be tough to choose. If you can't decide between a slipper with a back, versus a slide or specialty workout socks, Dr. Brenner says it's just about personal preference. Although for people with Haglund's deformity (a bump at the back of the heel), Dr. Brenner recommends wearing an open-back slipper to decrease the risk of rubbing and irritation. When stuck between an enclosed slipper or a sandal version, choose open-toe for more breathability if you live in a warmer climate or tend to overheat.

Refer to your specific slipper to learn more about care and washing. Some slippers, like Oofos or Ultraideas, are machine-washable, while others that we tested (like the Vionic slippers) are not. If the shoes aren’t machine washable, check that they have antibacterial and anti-odor treatment to keep them in tip-top shape.

According to Dr. Brenner, yes. Donning a pair of supportive slippers or comfortable slides helps your feet absorb shock, especially when walking on unforgiving surfaces like wood floors, tile, or marble. If you deal with foot issues like bunions or plantar fasciitis, wearing a supportive pair of house shoes can alleviate pain and, in some cases, help support recovery.
